| What are Filk Songs? Filk Songs were inspired by fans as far back as the 1960’s when folk music was very popular. Fans of science fiction, fantasy and soap operas would choose popular songs of the time, usually folk songs when the tradition started, and put their own lyrics to them. The songs depicted events in the stories and information about the characters and usually followed the format of the original songs from which the melodies were borrowed. For example, in “Hello Dolly”, the last line is “Dolly’ll never go away again”, and in the filk “Hello Dobby” the last line is “Dobby’ll never be a slave again!” Another noted feature of filk songs is their humor. They are often satires of the stories and characters written by fans who know them very well. I hope you will enjoy this collection of my own filks as well as those written by the talented writers who have allowed me to publish their filk songs on this site. |
